Hey ho everyone. This is Billy Concarney fresh off his first round of golf for this season… but we are here to talk about a different round. The first round of the playoffs took place this past Monday and let’s talk about wee bit about it. It won’t be long though because I’m old and can’t really remember a lot.
Game one saw the Slayers facing off against the reigning league champions Hackers. The Hackers have struggled a bit this season but they want to three-peat and to do so they would have to get past the first round.
This was a great back and forth game and when it was all said and done. The Hacks took a 10-9 win to keep their hopes alive. The Slayers would have to wait and see how the rest of the night played out to see how their playoff story would unfold.
Game two saw the second place regular season finisher Sabres taking on the underrated Lynx. This was really a dominant performance by the Lynx led by team captain Samuel “Jackson” Whidden. He tallied 5 goals and 4 helpers…just one point shy of Sittler’s record…oh yea, wrong league. But a huge feat nonetheless the less. That performance paved the way for a 10-3 whooping and thus moved the Lynx into rd two. Sam wins this weeks HFHL Player of the Week honours. Way to go Sammy Boy!
Game three was the tale of two opposites…the Chill one one side…cool as ice and the Fire…who have been hot as of late.
This was a great game. Honourable mention goes to Chill goalie Brendan Hanrahan who gave up one goal on 44 shots. That’s a pretty big deal in this league. It was very close and both goalies were stingy all things considered. Not often we have a scoreless third period. But we had one tonight, and with that, we also had a 5-1 win going to the Chill.
So there you have it folks. Round one complete.
Next up are the semifinals which look like this…
The Slayers squeak in after their first round loss by having the lowest plus/minus in round one…however, they lose their number one seeding and move to the back of the line.
With the Sabres loss, that leaves the Chill as the highest seed. However, it also means that they will face the Slayers in the next round and that will be a battle for sure. The Chill have a well balanced team backed by arguably the best goalie in the league at the moment. The Slayers are a speedy offensive wrecking ball and Zach Payne has stepped his game up quite a bit this season. Will be an interesting battle.
Speaking of battles, remember when an entire team got booted from the playoffs because of the actions of a few?
Well that’s never happened…yet…
That’s brings us to the other semifinals featuring the Lynx and the Hackers. This will also be an interesting battle but we prefer to call this match up a gentlemanly game between two wonderful groups of fine young men…or…see above.
Seriously, this should be a great game and anyone of these two can beat the other on any given night. Goalies will play a part as will cool heads.
So, Thsi Monday at 7: 00, we have the Lynx and the Hackers. This is followed by the Chill facing the Slayers.
So if you are looking for something to do come on out to the Fish Bowl and check the games out.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and have a great rest of the week folks!
