Happy New Year! - Jan 14, 2026

Hey ho ladies and gents. This is Billy Concarney here, resident reporter extraordinaire Halifax’s premier whiffle ball league known across the globe as THE HFHL!
I’m here to give you some sort of a recap about what went on last night at the facility we like to fondly refer to as Ye Ol’ Fishbowl…so sort of recap I shall!

Hackers vs Fire
Hacks are the reigning champs and anted to have a great start against the new look Fire, led by newly crowned Fire captain Anil Snook.
Hacks came out quick as the ever improving Breton Wilson nabbed his first of the season on a pass from Sam Haliburton. Returning veteran Troy Winsor made his presence known as he followed up with a goal from his sidekick AJ Brown. But the Fire kind of new guy who played a few games last season Pat MacDonald stepped up and grabbed a nice goal on a feed from workhorse Shannon Thoms. Anil Snook then took a pass from Pat MacDonald and tied it all up at 2 after the first.
The second saw each team trade goals and the goalies made some sweet stops and we had a 3 all tie after the second.
The third saw the Hackers get their lead back when Sam Haliburton ripped a shot past Brendan Hanrahan but that was short lived as Anil Snook tied it up on a sliding pass from Joel Arbuckle…
The two teams battled evenly until there were about 30 seconds left. An errant play in the corner gave Troy Winsor the chance to throw a pass out front to AJ Brown , who made no mistake and just like that what could have been a tie gave way to the start of an undefeated season for the Hackers as they pursue a three peat….5-4 Hackers!

Sabres vs Lynx

The Sabres coming off a last place finish last season wanted to make a statement. The Lynx just wanted to have a full team for once.
First period saw Brett Dempsey gran two goals and Chris Inness picked up two helpers. Max Mailhot tallied as well and it was 3 zip after one for the blades.
Second period started with Inness and Dempsey teaming up once agains, this time Chris sniped the goal. The Lynx scored two in the second but the Sabres took control with three. 6-2 Sabres after the second.
The third was a trade off as each team notched a goal and when it was all over…who cares…oops a Carney moment there.
The Sabres pick up the win dominating 7-3. Worthy to note that the Lynx put in a huge effort in the third, but Brendan Hanrahan, who was standing in for Jason Boudreau who uncharacteristically missed the first game of a HFHL season…
faced 25 shots only getting beat once. His 39 save performance gives him the nod for week one’s HFHL player of the Week honours. Brendan gets a $15 Tim’s card for his efforts. Way to go Mr Hanrahan!!

Chill vs Slayers

This was looking like a great match up and it sure did t disappoint. The Chill started things off with team captain Sean Fitzgerald scoring unassisted. And that’s as particular as this one is going to get for the moment…too many goals!
Ryan Demerchant scored unassisted after that. Slayers Aidan Walsh from Justin Logan. Then Slayers cap Mark Butyn from Jordan Castilloux. All tied up…for a minute. Last seasons play off mvp Brad Green from TJ Norris and it was a 3-2 Chill lead after the first.
Second…a bunch of goals…like 8 in total. This is that each team scored 4…so my math says Chill lead 7-6 headed into the third.
Slayers tie it up with veteran team up Jordan Castilloux from Matthew Monk. But Sathy where it ended. Chill were too much down the stretch and tallied 3 goals to solidify the win and start their quest for an undefeated season…10-7 Chill over Slayers.

So…that’s all I’m saying bout dat!
Hope you all have a great week and see you on ten dance floor next Monday!
