And So It Begins…Week 1 recap - Sep 17, 2025

Well hello there fans of the HFHL. My name is Billy Concarney and I’m here to tell you a little bit about what went on last night at Ye Ol’ Fish Bowl.
Week one saw a lot of goals, a lot of big saves and a lot of whining…so a typical night at the office here folks…but enough of the chitchat, let’s get at er!

Fire vs Hackers

Well, new season…same old story for the undermanned Fire. They were short a few key players. The Hackers, poised to start their quest for a twopeat, had a full bench.
Not much to report here, the Hackers ran the Fire to the ground. Fire keeper Brendan “the carpenter” Hanrahan played lights out and faced 50 shots. The Hackers beat him twice in each period and Brad “ The Machine” Green had a hatty! Well done Brad.
Craig “The Gargoyle “ Burgoyne made a few big saves and only gave up 1, and if you need help with the math, the Hackers took this one 6-1.

Lynx vs Sabres

Both teams are looking great on paper here folks, but sometimes paper ain’t used for anything but starting Fire…hey wait, that line is best saved for a Fire write up. Shucks….
This was a slug fest, not literally, but on the score sheet. I’m not going to go through the entire game play by play, but just know that after the first it was 4-3 Sabres. The second saw the teams trade two each, so 6-5 after two.
The third had the Sabres grab a quick two goal lead only to have the Lynx answer back to keep it close. Then Brett Dempsey made it a two goal lead again with his 4th of the night…but rookie Nick Vallee notched his first two of what might turn out to be an illustrious career here in the HFHL…and it was all tied up…that is until returning impact player Matt Strum took the ball from his own defence man, told everyone to go sit down, and then proceeded to go end to end and tucked one past a sprawling Dylan Warren to take a late last minute lead and that was it folks. 9-8 win for the Lynx one their season debut.

Slayers vs Chill

So…we have these preseason runs and drafts so that captains can see what kind of new talent is coming into the league. Now, we have to thank Mark Butyn, Captain of the Slayers, for bringing up our numbers with a smoking recruiting drive in the final weeks. However, we can’t help but think maybe he told ONE of the new guys not to come out first the preseason run…just maybe. We will leave that up to you to judge and let’s see if you can figure out who that guy is…
First period saw the the Slayers come out quick as they scored 3 unanswered goals. Aiden Walsh from Shannon Thoms, Ted McGeen from from Aiden and the Aiden and Shannon once again.
Second period
Ted McGeen from Mark Butyn. Chill get on the board with Jordan Castilloux grabbing his first from Justin Logan…Ted McGeen from Aiden Walsh, Ted McGeen from Aidan Walsh…Aidan Walsh from Ted McGeen. 7-1 Slayers after the second.
Jordan Castilloux started the third with a goal from Justin Logan…followed by Kevin Shute from Ted McGeen, Ted McGeen from Shannon Thoms and then the Chill grabbed two more. Sammy “Blue Eyes” Haliburton from Adam Healy and then rookie Alex Sauson from Justin Logan. This one finished off with the Slayers winning 9-4.

Our HFHL Player of the Week honours goes to rookie Ted McGeen who had 5 goals and 2 helpers. Way to go Teddy!

A worthy of mention note…only one penalty last night…great job everyone.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and see you all at the Fish Bowl!
Be well folks
