And then there were 4 - Apr 24, 2024

Hey ladies and gents and boys and girls of all shapes and sizes! This is Billy Concarney here with a shirt and sweet recap of the 1st round play offs this past Monday.

Hackers vs Slayers

This game saw the last place Hackers facing the top seeded Slayers. It was a great game and the Hackers drew first blood taking an early 1 goal lead. But the Slayers answered back with a Sam Whidden led attack where he had an assist and two of the teams first 3 goals. At the end of the first it was 3-1 Slayers
The second was even Steven’s as each team tallied twice. 5-3 after the second for the Slayers.
Now, before each game, Marty “the party” Kane explained that the three winners would advance and the team with the best plus minus for the play off game who lost would advance.
The Hackers got within one as they scored first in the third. Slayers answered back to get that two goal lead. The Hackers again fought to get within one when Stu Whidden grabbed a third period goal. The Slayers once again answered back and took the two goal lead. Now…do you all remember Chris Webber? He made a bad call on his own that robbed his team of the chance to advance in the NCAA playoffs years back. Well…this was kind of one of those moments. So,some, and we will leave them unnamed, called the goalie off the floor for the Hackers. This allowed the Slayers to add an empty net goal and take a three goal lead. Not the best idea when plus minus matters. Does it affect chances of moving on? Let’s see how things go…
Slayers advance to the Semis with an 8-5 win.

Fire vs Chill

This game was a wash right from the get go. The Fire have fought through the worst league attendance that I can ever remember. They are a strong crew but the Chill were just too much to handle. Adam Larder played back to back and faced 69 shots in this game. But, Craig “ the Gargoyle “ Burgoyne kept the door shut and made some key saves to grab a coveted and very rare shut out. He turned aside 22 shots and back stopped the Chill to an 11-0 win.
The Sun Out earns Craig the HFHL Player of the Week honors. Way to go Craigy boy!

Lynx vs Sabres

The Sabres were missing Bob Strum who was home nursing “old man “ injuries. The Lynx were missing there best player in Troy Winsor, who was soaking up the sun someplace warm.
It was a high scoring affair. The Lynx grabbed an early two goal lead but the Sabres came back tallying 3 to end the first with a 3-2 lead.
The Lynx opened up the second when Kyle Bradbury grabbed a slapper goal from Tommy Z. but Brett Dempsey scored an unassisted goal to get that lead back. But it didn’t last long. The Lynx went on a bit of a run scoring 4 ansanswerdc goals to end the second with a 6-4 lead.
The third started just how the second ended with the Lynx continuing to add to their lead scoring the first two goals of the period. The Sabres tried to keep pace when Stephen Fiander added a goal, but the Lynx scored two more after that. The Sabres scored three unanswered goals to get within striking distance before the Lynx stopped that rally with another tally.
Now, knowing that they needed to lose by no more than three to advance to the next round, the Sabres pulled their goalie and scored the last goal of the game. This gave the Lynx a 12-9 win and because of the Hackers pulling their goalie to give up that third goal, the Sabres get new life and advance because they finished the regular season ahead of the Hacks.

So there we have it,
The Slayers will be at home against the Sabres at PRCC this coming Monday at 7:00PM while the Chill will face off against the Lynx at 8:00PM
the Semis should be a great pair of match ups for sure.

On a more somber note, the league would like to extend our deepest sympathy to long time league vet Shane Erb in the passing of his brother Jarrett. Jarret played in the league a short time way back. Anyone who knew him would agree that he was a great young man. Prayer go out to the Erb family as they mourn his loss..

This is Billy Concarney saying so long and hug your loved ones today. Time is precious.
